In Monticello’s Parlor, a chess set always stood at the ready. According to family tradition, the ivory chessmen were a gift to Jefferson, an avid chess player, from the French court. This set is an exact copy of an original made by London artisan John Calvert, a Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners, in 1795.
